American Reflexxx

American Reflexxx is a short film documenting a social experiment that took place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Director Alli Coates captured performance artist Signe Pierce as she strutted down a busy oceanside street in stripper garb and a reflective mask. The pair agreed not to communicate until the experiment was completed, but never anticipated the horror that would unfold in under an hour.

The result is a heart wrenching technicolor spectacle that raises questions about gender stereotypes, mob mentality, and violence in America.

  1. To me much of this seemed predictable and unremarkable (which is itself a terrible statement).

But what did interest me – above the abuse – was the reaction of the crowd during the moments where she would turn around and march directly at them. They would actually panic and run from her. Many of those people were adult males.

To me that said more about how people view nonbinary folk than any other moment in the film.

  2. Wow – Can’t say that I’m surprised though. It was a bit rough to watch. I admit – I skipped through part of it (because of that). Sad.
