During a record-breaking year for state legislative attacks against the transgender community, ELLE turned to experts and activists for a roundtable discussion about how we got here—and where the fight goes next.

We All Have a Role to Play’: The Fight Against Anti-Transgender Legislation

Coming into 2021, LGBTQ advocates were bracing for a storm. All the elements were there, a perfect set up for a deluge across the country. But still, the blitz has been staggering.

It only took a few months for 2021 to be declared the worst year in U.S. history for state legislative attacks against the LGBTQ community and a record-breaking year for anti-transgender legislation. By April, state legislatures had introduced more than 100 bills aimed at restricting the rights of transgender people, with most falling into two buckets: bills aimed at blocking transgender young people from playing on sports teams consistent with their gender identity, usually under the argument of keeping women’s sports fair, and bills aimed at blocking transgender youth from receiving gender-affirming medical care.

  1. The big problem is…there are ALWAYS too many issues that need attention at the same time. Everyone wants their issue to be worked on. Everyone thinks their issue is THE issue that needs to be the focus. What that does is break the power we have into tiny groups that never bother the establishment. I’ve been an activist for Women’s Rights and Animal Rights for most of my life and this is a huge problem. BLM, Violence against Women, Choice, I could go on and on, naming issues that are all important to those who working to bring about change. We are powerful if we all work TOGETHER but that’s not going to happen. Money is power but the money we all have is distributed among many, many groups, for all the different issues. Because of this, we never get anywhere, or we crawl along being thrown crumbs to shut us up. I don’t know how to fix this. There are so many issues, diseases, animal rights, child abuse, drunk driving, violence, gun control, the environment, pollution, health care, and on and…and people are working on each of those. Activists are spread too thin. Everything is important, especially to those who feel the effects of the issues. You can call for help but understand that you’re one voice among billions who are desperate and calling for help themselves. It’s a nightmare, believe me. So don’t feel that no one cares, or is helping, people are working hard, but too much is wrong so we can’t work together and that’s done on purpose by the government/culture, so that we never really get anywhere.
