My transgender daughter should not have to use the men’s restroom – Chicago Tribune

My transgender daughter should not have to use the men’s restroom – Chicago Tribune:

“My daughter is in kindergarten. She’s 6. She loves unicorns and mermaids and soccer. And I’m concerned about my community forcing her to share the restroom with men.

Currently she uses the girls’ restroom. But some Washington state legislators want her in the men’s room — because she was born with a penis.”

Personally I think the headline here is a little melodramatic. The main point of the story is trying to change the way books are being marketed to children, not to do away with Princesses or Knights, valiant or otherwise.

Today :P

Well, Ive had better days than today…

Two sick kids, a pounding headache, and getting my fingers caught in a door pretty much sum thing up.

Thankfully, the kids are doing better than yesterday, mostly bad coughs and drainage. My headache is mostly due to sinus pressure and my fingers, while very sore are just bruised and not broken.

So even though there have been times when I just wanted to crawl back into bed and pet end today didn’t happen, I can see how things could have been worse and I should count my blessings… which I am doing!

I’m not sure if I will post anything later or not, even this little bit of typing makes my fingers sting, but I will have more to write about later in the day, (Saturday).

So I hope everyone is safe and sound at home, keeping warm or cool as required, and that you all have a wonderful evening.

It’s Past Time For Sensible, Intelligent Gun Control

If you listen to the Right Wing, Conservative, Pry the Gun From My Cold Fingers, segment of the political scene, odds are you think everything is fine and dandy in the Land of the Free and Armed. Maybe you think gun control is anti-American or unconstitutional and if you think these things, such is your right.

That does not however make you ‘Right’.

I have never had an issue with people owning weapons who have a legitimate and legal reason to do so.

It is the other people who I take issue with. Those for whom these weapons are a means to a violent, illegal end. Those who only reason for possessing a firearm is to kill other humans. You know who these people are; they make the news with terrifying regularity. Killing sprees in churches, malls, movie theaters, and town halls. The gang bangers, the drive by shooters, the ones who kill for thrill of having the power of life and death in their hands.

I take issue with violent, mentally ill people having access to weapons of any type and yes, if you have ‘anger management issues’ I think you have a mental condition which should bar you from ever owning a gun.

If you are a gun owner then it is your responsibility and duty to your community to make them secure so criminals, children, and those I have already mentioned cannot gain access to them. If you aren’t responsible enough to do that, then you certainly are not responsible enough to own a gun in the first place.

I’m going to give links to the stories from just this week of senseless gun violence which could have been avoided through the use of sensible, intelligent laws and the repeal of dangerous legal standards such as stand your ground and conceal/carry.

Life, House vs. Home

I didn’t realize until today just how much having the kids at home all day affected me. It hasn’t been anything major, no meltdowns or tantrums, just a level of stress which began small but has steadily grown. I realized it today because this is the first day all of the kids were gone. Off to school and friends and all the normal aggravations of being a kid… and all of the joys too, though it will be much later in life before they realize how blessed these days really are.

I awoke to a silent house. No television, no computers or game systems. No rough play, no squeals, and yes, there were no voices raised in anger because someone went too far. There was just me and my heartbeat… and my thoughts. I realized while there are times when, out of frustration, I remember the old saying; ‘children are to be seen and not heard’, it is the hearing, the knowing, and yes, the frustration which makes this building into a home. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have it in my life. I don’t think I could stand to live here, in a house empty of the life my family brings.
