Preparing For NaNoWriMo 2013

It’s less than a month until NaNoWriMo 2013…

I must be a glutton for punishment because I have entered again this year.

I have a working title “Broken”, an opening scene, and some ideas on others, I also have an vague picture of the ending.

My concern now is managing the emotional stress I know I am creating for myself. An important part of writing for me is having an emotional connection to the story and then pouring all it into writing. It makes each word immediate, every scene charged. I have a personal stake in each character and the plot speaks to me, becoming a living breathing thing which can consume every waking moment.

This takes such a toll on me, but I can’t do this any other way. I know I am going to be exhausted when the month is over, but I hope to have completed not only the 50,000 word challenge, but to have a story I feel proud to share.

We’ll see.

I don’t know why, but suddenly my posts are being dated incorrectly. I always wait until the WP Stats page shows after Midnight before posting so it shows as the next day. Now it shows up as the previous day which is somewhat annoying…

Not sure if it’s WP or PixelPumper causing the issue. I’m thinking of using WP’s backend to post something and see what happens.

Family Night

We’ll be leaving soon to go to the local fireworks display. It’s a few hours away but if you go too late, you’ll never find a parking place. Growing up, this was one of my favorite things and I still enjoy them today.

I think though, the really fun part is watching the boys. For them there is still the magic and wonder. These will be the things they will remember about their own childhood 4th just as I do. This is one of the things which I dislike about growing up… the loss of the magic and wonder which could be found in the small things and the big. In the memories of special days and events which somehow become tarnished… everyday and normal as I have gotten older.

If you listen to the experts, this is called gaining maturity, being realistic, becoming an adult and are lauded as a good thing. I disagree… I think we need those doses of fairy dust, the occasional wisp of magic no matter how old we become. In loosing these, it seems we loose a part of ourselves along the way. We become caught up in the day to day struggles, the stress and worry, the ever growing fog of despair and desperation in which we so often loose our way.

That is what is special about days like this. To be a child again, even for a little while. To be lost in the moment, filled with wonder… To watch as magic unfolds before your eyes.

Independence Day

Tomorrow is Independence day here in the U.S. A day off for most of us, a time to spend with family and friends.

I wish all my fellow Americans a safe and fun holiday, and to those who live elsewhere in the great big world, I hope you have a great day too!

Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day here in the US. Despite all the pointless hoopla of sales and having an extra day off, there is a very real and lasting reason to take a moment and remember why we have such a day in the first place…

So, to all of those who have had loved ones, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, fathers and mothers who answered our nations call but never returned, I want to say I remember, I will not forget, and though I may not know all the names, they are forever etched in my heart.

To those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, I know you cannot hear me now, but still I will say “Thank You.”
