While the conversation around gender sensitisation and representation has become increasingly important, Bollywood is still living in a time capsule.
Today, the actual medical group, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released several pieces of evidence-based guidance to support the care and protection of transgender youth.
This is beyond anything even remotely acceptable.
Adults posting on the official Achille ISD Oklahoma Facebook page conspired to physically and emotionally harm a transgender 12-year-old student.
“There has been a rash of anti-transgender articles published in the UK press over the last couple of weeks (I have no desire to link to them, but you can read rebuttals here and here and here). They warn readers about ‘transgender zealots’ pushing ‘transgender agendas’ designed to coerce young children into becoming transgender, and they are full of fear-mongering over ‘children sacrificed to appease trans lobby,’ and claims that ‘transgenderism has become ‘an industry’.’ These pieces, written from a politically conservative and blatantly trans-antagonistic standpoint, share something in common with their supposedly ‘trans-friendly’ counterparts: You know, the articles that start out by acknowledging that transgender people exist and should not face persecution, but then pivot (under the guise of scientific and/or journalistic objectivity) to the possibility that some (perhaps many?!) children who socially transition may not be ‘really transgender.’ These latter pieces will likely cite statistics about desistance, point to instances of people detransitioning, and/or raise the possibility that the apparent increase in transgender children may be due to ‘peer pressure’ or ‘social contagion.’”
“Fear has been the primary strategy employed by conservatives opposed to transgender equality, such as in the fight against the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO). A new video circulating among various advocacy groups takes this tactic to a new extreme by not only conflating transgender women with male predators, but actually attempting to portray all transgender women as having malicious intent.”
It is bad enough to know there are those who out trans adults but there is simply no excuse for harassing trans children. If you read the original blog post and then the included twitter conversation, I think you will find it as chilling as I did.
Being straight, lesbian, gay, or trans are issues which should not be subject to bullying tactics. It is up to each individual to find the path in this life which is right for them regardless of your agreement or disdain.
If you agree with a persons life choices, support them in any way possible.
If you don’t, then keep it to yourself.
“Attorney Jared Woodfill, the ringleader of the successful campaign to repeal Houston’s nondiscrimination ordinance, is reportedly representing a man who has been sued for secretly taking photos of naked women in a bathroom. The campaign used the slogan ‘No Men In Women’s Bathrooms’ to stir fears of transgender individuals.”

What is depicted in the film is fairly benign, yet I know even small things can be a trigger.
