Feminism, biological fundamentalism and the attack on trans rights

Feminism, biological fundamentalism and the attack on trans rights

Across Europe, the far Right is mobilizing around sexual difference and for the forced imposition of heterosexual norms by drawing on biological arguments to border the ‘other’. Whilst we are familiar with the ways in which the far Right have long organized against the racialized ‘foreigner’ through anti-migrant and Islamophobic rhetoric, we are now seeing the ‘othering’ of anyone who does not subscribe to the tenets of the heteronormative nuclear family. Issues around reproduction, sexual difference and the family are now a key political battleground. As trans rights in the UK come under attack from powerful government and media voices, as well as ‘gender critical’ feminists, Sophia Siddiqui warns of the multiple dangers ahead when/if we cede territory to far-right ideas on innate biological difference.

Attacks on Trans Athletes are Also an Attack on Intersex People

Attacks on Trans Athletes are Also an Attack on Intersex People:

Intersex people make up as much as 1.7 percent of the population and are born with bodies that differ from what others might think of as “typically” male or female. Although being intersex isn’t that rare, this population is widely misunderstood and underrepresented, much like the trans community. Racist colonial erasure, late-stage capitalism, and the medical industrial complex have combined to create implicit assumptions (and often explicit recommendations) with which trans and intersex groups are all-too familiar. We are told, usually by cis and non-intersex people, there’s only one right way to have a body — and that that body should be as normatively close to binary and cis as possible.

In a first, hospital vows to ban cosmetic surgeries on intersex infants

The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago apologized to those harmed by medically unnecessary genital surgeries.

A prominent children’s hospital publicly apologized Thursday for performing cosmetic genital surgeries on intersex infants and pledged to end the practice.

“We recognize the painful history and complex emotions associated with intersex surgery and how, for many years, the medical field has failed these children,” the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago said in a statement. “We empathize with intersex individuals who were harmed by the treatment that they received according to the historic standard of care, and we apologize and are truly sorry.”

The apology, signed by the hospital’s CEO and three head physicians, comes after activists, over a yearslong campaign, called on the institution to ban cosmetic genital surgery on intersex infants, which is irreversible. The signatories also committed to “evolving” their policies going forward and stated that the hospital would not perform such surgeries unless medically necessary or with willful consent from fully informed patients.

Lawmakers in the US Unleash Barrage of Anti-Transgender Bills

Proposed Laws Threaten Health, Rights of Trans Kids

… lawmakers in the US state of South Dakota will consider a bill that would make it a felony for healthcare providers to give gender-affirming care to minors. If passed, medical professionals who provide transgender children with puberty blockers, hormones, or other transition-related care would face up to 10 years in prison.

No more medical paperwork to change gender on Illinois licenses

No more medical paperwork to change gender on Illinois licenses

CHICAGO — Illinois residents no longer need to have medial paperwork to update the gender marker on state driver’s licences and IDs.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the secretary of state’s office has introduced a new form this week allowing transgender, intersex and non-binary people correct the marker on their licenses.

Y does not necessarily equal M: On what intersex people can tell us about gender identity

Y does not necessarily equal M: On what intersex people can tell us about gender identity

The current debate about intersex women in sports, is actually weakening the TERFs and the transphobic right’s attacks against transgender people. The very existence of XY intersex women, who have been raised as women and who identify as women, makes it very hard to reduce gender identity to chromosomes and genitals.

A few times I have ended up in discussions with “trans exclusionary radical feminists (TERFs) in social media. These women are neither “radical” nor real “feminist”, sharing – as they do – the common traditionalist prejudices against transgender women.

Transgender, intersex, and gender non-conforming people #WontBeErased by pseudoscience | Not-Binary.org:

As scientists, we are compelled to write to you, our elected representatives, about the current administration’s proposal to legally define gender as a binary condition determined at birth, based on genitalia, and with plans to clarify disputes using “genetic testing”.1 This proposal is fundamentally inconsistent not only with science, but also with ethical practices, human rights, and basic dignity.2
